Daryl Hall and John Oates have paralleled the growth of music from
the emerging early age of rock and roll, to the point, where now, they are among the
innovators and leaders in a genre that continually strives for change and growth. To lead
such a race is at the same time frantic and exciting, not to mention, precarious. Their
informative musical years paralleled each other. Local bands, solo acts, session players,
Philadelphia natives, all of these are in their background. History. Today they are as in
step with one and other as any two individuals can be; musically. The rest of their lives
are their own, so it's not unusual to hear them asking each other; "What did you do
last night?" But really, Daryl Hall and John Oates are today's people. In the last
two years, they have earned two gold singles for "Rich Girl," and "Sara
Smile," and four gold albums. Their three RCA Records, "Daryl Hall & John
Oates," "Bigger Than Both Of Us," and "Beauty on a Back Street"
are R.I.A.A. gold, Platinum, and gold respectively. The breadth of their success has even
reached back into their past and made one of their early albums, "Abandoned
Luncheonette" a gold record too. They have won two NATRA awards as weIl. "Sara Smile"
was named Best Song of the Year, and they were named Best Duo of the Year. As for
a little irony, Daryl & John were also named Best New Group on last year's Rock Awards
Show. Best new group? WeIl 8 years in the making isn't so long, is it? With the release of
"Beauty on a Back Street" late in 1977, Daryl Hall and John Oates embarked on an
extensive North American tour, followed closely by a European concert schedule. The
performance, as always, 5 another extension of these two diverse yet syncromeshed
personalities, and if the seventies have given birth to two new stars, they are Daryl Hall
and John Oates.
