On 15 Aug 2003, LA had the pleasure of
the expansiveness of the solo artist himself.....Daryl Hall
..interpreting LIVE ...his much anticipated single..."CAB DRIVER"
from the recent U S album "CAN'T STOP DREAMING" released 10 June
2003.
What separates Mr.
Hall from most artists recently heard by this listener is the
seamless way in which he seems to present his own life via his
craft... "Cab Driver" seemed totally and completely brand new. It
was powerful. It was poignant. It projected forward life. It was
magnificent!
The concert at the
Wiltern.. well conducted by Hall..could not have survived, however
without the individual "genius like" talent generated from six
other individually skilled and colorful players....
Charlie DeChant, (
the beloved Mr. Casual ) and Jeff Catania ( who enjoyed his
loveable LOUD ENOUGH sound ) representing just that..and Mr.
assistant conductor ...T Bone Wolk...not to mention if John Oates
were not there....the crowd would not yelp out those deafening
screams when all of the "hits" were played..as they remember HALL
AND OATES nostalgia...
....Still it felt
like an opening of a new era...as well...lyrically and expansively
as imagined or not .....a sense of profundity seemed in our
midst.....length of career...love...ease...joy.....energy...
Of particular note
was the "You've lost that lovin feelin"...in a stunning duet by
Hall and Oates capturing that very new expansiveness felt in the
performance this particular evening...
"Starting all over
again" also featured the historical yet current magic of the
duo...
"Getaway Car"
remains the "DO IT FOR LOVE" favorite of this listener though how
can one not take note of the instant EXTRA creating and unique
ambiance given freely to us ...that night...of "Forever for
you"...?....( " I must play my part .......my part of playing the
fool to love you " DH) .......
The light tones of
the banter and soul pouring to the audience were charming and
warm...natural , but with vocal conservation...needed for the
lengthy duration...given out..SO FREELY ..it seemed...
LA is proud to
provide a, as Hall described it, "second musical home"..for this
extraordinary group of seven...because we love them as much as he
said he loves LA...probably ...more....
Oates wears an
eternally gifted smile...which obviously comes from a very deep
place...in his heart....while setting a certain additional tone
from his own unique knowledge of what it is he does....double
checks ....and does ...some more...
The only thing
that will always bug me is that I wish the complex acoustical
wierdness could be fixed or married to the concert hall design.
It's..not a bad room..and looks ok ...but why is sound marriage so
difficult...?????? I wish i knew...We talked about it half of the
way to our next destination....
